An increase in your Download Allowance!

We are happy to announce that we are improving our satellite Internet service with faster speeds and an increase in your Download Allowance―and it won’t cost you a single penny! We are pleased to bring you a better Internet service that fits the life you live no matter where you choose to live it.

This week, our engineers will complete the rollout of network upgrades which began this past summer. Some of you may have noticed the effects of these enhancements; now they are available for everyone! These upgrades will boost your browsing and download performance, letting you live and work where you want while staying connected to the rest of the world. We have also increased your Download Allowance by 50 MB, providing an additional download capacity of well over 1 GB per month!!!

    Scott, you and me both.
This is the worst internet service I have ever seen. Dialup is better. More reliable, faster, and doesn't throttle down when you are downloading anything. I can't use Skype, I can't use GoTo Meeting, and I can't even use Yahoo! Messenger voice. The lag and delay is so bad, that there's absolutely no way to carry on a conversation.

That garbage about the satellite being 22,000 miles away is just that: garbage. The signal doesn't take three seconds to go that far. electromagnetic waves move at the speed of light. How do you think Cable providers get their signal? From the same types of satellites Hughes does. The problem is, it's set up to slooooow down.

If there were another option, even dialup with a 56K modem, I'd use it, but there isn't. Until I move back to a city, that is. Can't wait.
    • The satellite is 22'000 miles above the equater, so lets say you triangulate to 25'000 miles from the satellite to where you live. Now every request you make has to go up and down to the NOC and out the the website and then make the whole trip back again, so that is 4 times that 25'000 miles, thats 100'000 miles total, which is around 3/4 of a second delay built in, then you add the wait for your request to queue in and server latency at the NOC and the website then you can easily obtain a 3 second delay and with voice that data has to be translated from data to voice so when you add it all up it does come to quite a delay. With that said, the latency for whatever reason on the 9000 systems is running high right now and that does make for an even longer delay, but even with perfect conditions (which I can tell you from personal experiance on my old business system) there is going to be a noticeable delay. Can't be fixed, no way possible. It is just simple math.
    • heard this shit before.. why is it so better for others.. it is called you make a fortune off of us.. upgrade your shit

Yes and it is getting worst my daughter is taking online classes at Jacksonville State its so slow at 10 pm she has to drive 20 miles to get on a WiFi .The only thing that is better is the roll over so you will not go into FAP but honest to goodness it so slow I don't think you can reach your limit.
That is pitiful that I pay $90 per month at least I use to pay more when I could get in FAP.
    This crap is bad now.
People at my job talk about using Hulu, com , netflix or blockbuster you can't even start using it because of being so slow.
My son would like to use xbox 360 but that's not going happen either .

    • Yeah, the xbox 360 probably won't ever work, that is due to the satellite latency and there is nothing anyone can do about that. I have heard of a few getting it to work and you can play games like World of Warcraft but no shooter games or anything like that. Some people never get it to work even when the satellite has the best possible latency. I was watching Hulu just fine a while back, it would buffer during a commercial once in a while but all in all it did good. I havn't tried recently though.

You know they say hughes is the option for running a business from you home in the the country but they are no way not with the way the service is now.
Sorry to run a company down I have dealt with over 20 years but this sucks.
I thinking of going back to dial-up for real so it has to be real bad for me to do that.
    • The business side is a completely different beast, that is the reason I tried to get back on it. Commercial traffic has a higher priority on the satellite and there fore it takes alot more for your speed to degrade and generally the latency stays reasonable. When I had my old 7000 system, it took about 2 years or so after people on my sat started complaining about speeds before I saw any problems.

I have run my business with the Hughes Pro service since 2002. While we all have complaints from time to time, without it I would not have been able to do anything so I am glad that the Hughes service has been there for me.

I will be so glad to get back to civilization, where there are choices!!!!! For what we pay, Hughes has a lot to be desired.!!!! I have friends who have bundles that cost less than what I pay for "highspeed". Bundles vary,,some are cable, highspeed internet and a landline for around $50.$60.... ..depending on what you need. I love having some choices, too!! This meter thing is so ridiculous and the $5.00 tokens!!This is some sort of Mickey Mouse run company!! I pay$69.76 a month for 2 laptops. They are each used2-3 times a week.I hadn't picked up mine for 3 days. I turned it on this evening to find the meter completely red and had to use my 1 free token? I feel like I'm in grade school! Three more months,,out of here and good bye HughesNet YEAAAAAAHHHH!
    • That just about sounds exactly what is happening here....I can start out with 100% when I turn my laptop on...I open my Outlook and get my email and the status meter seems to drop like a gas gage....This has only been happening the last couple of months and I have not changed anything on my end. The updates I do do for programs I have set to do at the "free time"....This happens each and everyday...I haven't been able to do my genealogy research as usual because of this...I broke down and paid for some tokens because I had a "must" file I had to down load....it took all 3 tokens for the one file over an hour and a half time...the file downloaded so slow....it shouldn't have taken that long and it cost me to get it...big time....I still believe there has to be a problem other than my laptop and router, because nothing has changed on my end.

      Barb
    • the only thing thats changed is their new thing we can bank our unused download time so now were paying for those so called free mb . is bullshit if these mb are rolled over then we should be able to use them any time .and instead of 100% each day we should be getting . what ever is left .so if i used 50% on one day i should have 150% percent the next . and if this banking our left overs works on our side not theirs then we wont need the tokens because it would be harder to go in to the red. it benefits hughes.net not use .

Sara, it's been 3 months since this post. Can you tell us anything about the "network upgrades" you mentioned?

I personally am noticing a recent (last 2 weeks) degrade in performance. Drastic degrade. Having worked thru the tech support chain in the past, I am dreading waiting and wading thru the queue to the 2nd tier guys, and I'm just hoping (like magic) it'll clear up.

    What's the scoop?

    Thanks.

    Mike

    • Hello Mike, the last time you spoke with our technical department (Nov) we upgraded your modem. Since you’ve noticed a recent speed decrease (last two weeks) I’d like to do some troubleshooting to see what could have changed. Please expect a call from our tech department within the next few days and let me know if you still need my help after talking to them. Thanks, Sara

Hughesnet..... Need to take this source of internet and either burn the shit down or refund people the money they"re scamming. Atleast change the advertisement or make your claims legit... I dont think i read a single good comment. Its one thing to use false/stretched truth to lure people into a shitty service but FFS dont say something is gonna be able to run perfectly fine on it... Then in the nxt breath say well if you upgrade it should be better for you... ya do that... Oh sure i'm gonna upgrade to a "faster" more capable of recieving more info.. as i'm told but in reality ya the signal may be able to recieve a little more info at once ITS STILL SHITTY and hughes gets more than enough of my money.... If i was holding the deed to this company... i'd burn it b4 i gave it to a homeless man... So SHITNET i do hope this company either goes bankrupt or who knows makes the advertisement legit... IT SHOULD READ... "Hughesnet" We understand we are a last hope cause we're so shitty however if you are a casual web browser "cough" old "cough" our network is just for you... Slow download speeds... we pick and choose when we think u used enough at a time, yep we're gonna slow it down some more! However if you stay up between 2am and 7am you can have a bit more steady connection. yes our prices are outrageous just wait till after the first month and after that you will have to pay us big money to cancel :) almost forgot... if a bird shits between ur signal and our tower.. yep thats right no connection. enjoy your day.. oh btw please sucker someone you know into our shitty network thanks.

Been on hughes for 10 years - always the same - always slow - does not qualify for broadband - misleading advertising - the only thing fast is how quick your money leaves your checking account. There are other service providers out there with satellite for 1/2 the price , higher allownces, faster speed - i am gone. ( www.excede.com)

As a new user, I was excited about upgrading from dialup in this rural area. That quickly changed when just loading an image laden Photoshop forum page caused my meter to shrink quickly. Half an hour in, I was out of MB's and wasn't even watching videos or streaming or d/l music!

My dialup was at least consistant. All the advertising, mailings and hype are soooo untrue so I would never recommend this to my country neighbors until HughesNet makes major changes!

    • I would go with the early bird special at Millenicom with the MIFI. If you ever get 4G from Verizon then you get 10GB at 4G speeds and then 10 more GB at 3g speed for $70 a month. Untill you get 4G you get 20 GB on 3g. It costs a bit up front but you don't have a contract either with higher caps, the same service and lower prices than with Verizon. I ordered Sunday and it cost me $230 total. Just an idea.

It does appear that this is the "web response test" and that most of the tests that were run were very acceptable. There does appear to be a late evening (Eastern Time) issue which a Hughes rep here might be able to address if you start a topic related to that, explain what has been done and see what Sara or one of the Hughes reps can do to address the issue.

The latest Hughes Earnings Report says that they have 15Kb (bits) per customer, so it is not surprising that it has always been slower in peak periods. For me that has typically been about half the off-peak speeds during peak.

No. Millenicom is a reseller of both Verizon and Sprint. Kevin quoted the figures for Verizon - Sprint has higher limits. Millenicom will happily sell you twice as much Verizon for the same price (or less) as Verizon would charge.

That's correct. However, the 20MB/month plan for $60/month is Verizon. Additionally, the "unlimited" plan is not really unlimited. If you exceed 50GB/month your service could be canceled. If you roam off the Sprint network you could end up with no service or an additional service charge as the Sprint contract only allows 300MB/month of roaming service.

New news I just picked up this minute.

"Millenicom is adding an Unlimited 3G/4G Plan that will work over the Sprint footprint starting February 1st. They are using the Franklin U600 (USB device with 4 external antenna ports). Pricing stays the same as their regular Unlimited Plan at $69.99/month with the normal $99.99 device purchase fee, $49.99 activation fee and $15.00 shipping fee. Customers currently using the Unlimited Plan can upgrade to 3G/4G by purchasing the new device (the activation fee is only $19.99 for current customers), they should check their address with the coverage locator on the Millenicom website to see if their location can get 4G service. Millenicom will be able to activate Sprint 3G/4G devices on their BYOD Plan for the same $69.99 rate."

whoopdeefuk hughes sucks and throttles almost everything and i am trapped with no alternative for for now, but dsl is coming here, hopefully soon............
    • I have been a Hughesnet customer for over five years, and hated every minute of it.Totally dissatisfied but so Happy to finally have a choice other than Hughesnet,I can finally cancel this miserable service I have been waiting for this day. one word [VIASAT 12 MBS] but more on that later,The days of Hughesnet are now numbered !! I Can't wait to join a class action lawsuit against them and see them go out of business for good.
Living in Rural NC I had 2 options 56k Modem or Hughesnet Satellite boasting 1.5 MBS, I choose the later.Hughesnet promised conection speed of upwards of 1.5 mbs is a joke the best I ever had was 974 kbs and always had error messages ,"web acceleration error" could'nt rely on it to do anything time sensitive,my kids had to go to someone elses house to do their online collage courses . I also had to contend with FAP [not so]Fair Access Policy ,that limits your daily allowence to 450 mbs a day, this has only recently been increased to 1gb a day . I have never been able to stream a movie ,because if I did I would go over my daily limit and be punished for 24 hours with even worse download speeds than I already had.Or I could buy a token for $10 to restore my service Sounds like a bunch of crooks to me.Calling customer service brings you to an outsourced company in india ,and the language barrier only further aggrivates the poor quality of service.I wish I had a way of billing hughesnet for all the time my internet connection failed or was so slow, that watching grass grow would have been faster. This company sucks.
Everything you read in post below has happened to me also,I can so relate it is frustrating living in Rural America and feeling you only have one Choice and that choice no matter how much it sucks is all you got, and to top it off I paid $80 per month for this crappy service. But now I do have a choice VIASAT a new company .And a new Satellite launched Oct of 2011 just begining to sell now January 2012

I said that I had only 2 options ,I should have said three 56k modem,Hughesnet Satellite or its rival WildBlue Satellite (wild blue had almost identical prices and service speed of up to 1.5 mbs) But now ViaSat has Acquired WildBlue Communications, and looks to Reposition WildBlue as Higher end Service Offering to deliver its broadband service through ViaSat-1, a single Ka-band satellite with 140 Gbits/s of available bandwidth. It promises to cover 75 percent of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, plus Canada.

update - it is awesome day of install I still had my Hughesnet hooked up and ran speedtest @ speedtest.net on both Hughsnet and then wildblue's new viasat on same laptop.

Hughsnet 0.20 mbs Wildblue 10.9 mbs and ran speed test on my Android phone useing my new wireless service with WildBlue and was shocked over 18.0 mbs

Long live VIASAT !!!!! and the end to Hughesnet do yourself a favor switch to VIASAT by way of WildBlue 1-877-362-7244

happy I’m Happy so very Happy
I have been a Hughesnet customer for over five years, and hated every minute of it.Totally dissatisfied but so Happy to finally have a choice other than Hughesnet,I can finally cancel this miserable service I have been waiting for this day. one word [VIASAT 12 MBS] but more on that later,The days of Hughesnet are now numbered !!

    • Yep, and current WB has separate up and down limits, but the new ones package both into a lower value.
    • Just ordered VIASAT and install date is February 29th. Leaping into WildBlue and jumping out of bed with Hughesnet...goodbye...breaking up...adios...can't wait! Thanks Barry for the fun post and the news about ViaSat. As soon as I got my notice in the mail about them I called them straightaway! My contract with Hughesnet expires on March 9th. Ha . . . love it! It can only get better! It has to...you know what I am talking about. It is a sin to have a new imac and not have internet up to par to go along with it. The price you pay for living in beautiful rural areas of America.

I am frustrated by all the changes and limitations and now extra costs for downloads. The download manager does not work on Apple OS X . What's up with that? Every platform should be included for download manager! So you'll have potentially un-kown number of folks downloading in the wee hours. Then what? good grief. I have to take my apple to an apple store just to download platform updates.

I'm trying to download a file from Microsoft its a whole 5 meg it will take over hour to download.I would not recommend this to my worst enemy thats bad .I thought Sara was going to get something done before I finally left this company to go any place else .I hope their will be class action law suite because I will put my name on it!!!!

There will never be any class-action suits so don't hold your breath. The contracts are well written and have been challenged many times in the past with negative results.
If you want/need help Sara is still your best course. If she has not responded or if she did but no one followed up I would recommend that you get back in touch with her to she if she can get the ball rolling again.

The mere fact that they call this broadband should be grounds for a lawsuit - it is more than deceptive avertising - it is bold faced LIE.

    • i would just like to say, if i knew that hughes net was so freaking slow, i would have NEVER got it ........ im so unpleased with their so called HIGH SPEED.... WHAT A JOKE.... I WILL NOT RECOMEND THIS SERVICE TO ANYBODY.....
    • Don....I hope you get this comment...we talked in December and I downloaded your FAP meter. I tried today to get it on my husbands laptop. I had it show up a few seconds in the lower bar on his screen, but as soon as i opened the browser it disappeared. Now I've tried to download it 3 more times and it shows in my programs and I keep clicking on open and I can't get it anywhere. What did I do wrong? I connect through my modem and he connects through the router. I did configure it for the 9000 modem, but it was there a few seconds and now it's lost. Doe's the browser have anything to do with it? My daughter downloaded Firefox yesterday for him and that's what I opened when I lost the meter...also have explorer and chrome. Thanks for any help!! Julie Ickes

Due to volume, only the 15 most recent replies are being displayed ...that is because if you are connectingthrough your hughes net, it will take 15 dyas to load all the negative comments and you will exceed your FAP

You would do even better to sign up with Millenicom instead of Verizon. $60/month and you get 20GB/month all using the save Verizon network. Glad to hear that cellular became a viable option for you as any good ground based option will usually beat any satellite based option.

    • OMG people Hughesnet is better than having nothing at all!One of my friends recently moved out of a DSL service area and said she did not want Hughesnet because it was not going to work well with Wow.However cell service is not always reliable either in rural areas.I have been a Hughesnet customer since last June and I am thrilled so far.MY Hughesnet bill is cheaper than my stupid Verizon land line was.

Nice to hear a positive comment for a change seems to be NOT the norm.
I think HN is doing all they can with improvements was a gift they didn't have to.

Tho I'm confused about WOW what service does she have now ?
Hmm I'm NOT a gamer, interesting I'll search for a trial of WOW so I will know better ? haha

Yep memories of dial up faded long ago and will never go back.
Started with the 6000 modem and don't know the year.

Upgraded to the 9000 22 months ago.
Thursday I did the free upgrade WB to Excede awesome speed 15-19Mbps, upload is about 3Mbps, ping less than 700ms.

haha I also have cellular, shortly a road test to see how it performs.

No doubt Hughes is the best deal if you can't get DSL,Cable or any other land base broadband if would work like they claim ,The free downloading 1 am to 6 am cst is great. But if you can not browse during the times you are at home because they are too many users it make the service unusable.
The tech support is as bad as it gets you can not understand the outsourcing techs from India with the broken English. The service tech that came to house didn't leave a good impression on me started out I ask the guy where he was from he reply from his momma .After he reloaded the software to the modem I did a speed check it was good like always from 6 am to 4pm then it goes to crap.

I hope this Verizon hot spot will work for me and I hate to leave Hughes for it but I'm just at my wits end,

Don't feel bad about being able to improve your service. Once a good ground based solution reaches satellite internet users (not just HughesNet) most satellite users will change services. However, as cities expand outward (and the associated services) more people move outward as well to avoid the issues associated with being "serviced". Therefore, old users fall away and new users come into the loop. A few of us use both as we must have the redundancy but the reality is that ground based services are simply better.
The only thing most new cellular users have to adjust to is the monthly limits. Uploads and downloads count toward the total and when you do hit the limit it costs extra rather than just getting slowed down so be sure to sign up for an account with Verizon Wireless so you can monitor your usage.

When we moved here to NW Az we each had a Verizon Air Card - the phones worked fine from a local tower......

But, data wouldn't work at all........ No agreement from Verizon with local wireless for data.

Three years later......no change and still no cable or dsl available..

download manager does not work well with Mozilla Firefox either ..and Windows updates cannot be scheduled through the download manager during off times...and DSL is not an option where we live..neither is cable..we have direct tv for tv or an outside antenna...for local channels only...we do live in the boonies...the customer service sucks...you get some idiot that does not even speak broken English they shatter the hell out of it..and you have no clue what you are being told to do..I have had Hughesnet for almost 2 years...and if anything better comes along..I AM GONE GONE GONE...
    • Donna, I am curious about this download manager. I accessed the Download Zone and the Download Manager through the HughesNet web site; only the hdminst.exe (services2hughesnet.com) Publisher is not known. My computer tells me this will possibly harm my computer! If you read my complaint below; you know that I cannot have that - again! I just don't understand; if this is a service offered from HughesNet, why is the Publisher of the program Unknown???

    sad I’m angry!
Well, let me share my experience over the last six months (I got HughesNet in June of 2011, but I was unable to use service correctly/not at all, for @two months):

I have so many issues, I'm not sure where to start! On 1/30/12; 24 hours after purchasing a new computer, I spoke with Kevin (case #30237367)and then Jennifer in Billing, about my bill vs. my lack of internet access - still no response on dispute. Also, on 2/2/12, (case #30243620) I was transferred to Itok services for remote access to my computer due to connection issues. I was charged $109.97 for this service (which I am currently disputing); with this service (or within 16-18 hours of this service on 2/2/12) I had to take my brand new Asus computer (purchased 12/29/11) to the Geek Squad at Best Buy in Tupelo, MS. The result of that visit was 51 viruses had infected my computer-traced back to the remote access. They had to keep my computer for three days to make sure everything (viruses) were removed. I called HughesNet-still no reply. On February 19, 2012; after speaking with someone in Tech Support (they "checked" my modem, etc. then tried to transfer me back to Itok!), and Billing, about my inability to access the internet due to HughesNet pop-up about my bill ($139.67), I believe I was granted about $30.00 credit; told to retry in an hour, tried to log on an hour later but my NEW COMPUTER wouldn't even boot up!! Called Geek Squad tech support's 800#. They spent over an hour on the phone with me, trying to get my NEW COMPUTER to boot up-that never happened. I was advised to take it back to Geek Squad in Tupelo, MS, where I was told my hard drive had been corrupted so badly, they just gave me another NEW COMPUTER! I have, STILL, not received a response from anyone at HughesNet. The only time I had a problem, was after HughesNet's Itok Services remotely accessed my computer, or HughesNet's Tech Support accessed my modem. I also had told Jennifer in Billing, that I had to move my computer out into my dining room because your representative in Amory, MS, where I live, didn't want to run the additional wiring so that my modem could be in my computer room with my computer. Your Amory, MS representative told me I had to go buy a Belkin Router and a Linksey's something or other (about $80.00 of additional equipment) but, when my internet kept "dropping" and I called HughesNet, I was told that you tell ALL your customers that for optimal service, the modem must be plugged into the computer directly! I was never informed of this by your representative. When I asked Jennifer about it, I was told that she could set up a service call but it would cost me somewhere around $100.00 for you guys to set it up. Still, with all of these issues, including a brand new computer that became good for nothing but a paperweight after HughesNet and Itok connected with it; I have still NOT HEARD A THING FROM HUGHESNET! I was also granted "tokens" at my sixth month anniversary date of HughesNet installation; and I have been all over this web site, clicking on various links, to try and find out how to access my tokens-and, guess what? You got it, can't seem to find it anywhere. I am informing you of all of these issues because; 1)I would think someone would want to resolve them, 2)I am a full-time student who, due to all the aforementioned issues, I have quite a bit of schoolwork to catch up on because I either had no service or I had no computer. I was not granted any of the benefits of the "Recovery Act" nor was I even made aware of it; and, yet, I have HughesNet because of having to move to my present address due to the tornadoes of 4/27/11; three EF5 tornadoes, that devasted this area on that day and, I believe, was part of the "Recovery Act" program. So, here I am, a full-time student who, due to virus infection, lack of internet accessability, and lack of a computer; has homework assignments to make up, which require downloading much information from the internet, probably more than my "daily allowance" and I can't even find the "tokens" HughesNet "gifted" me with on my 6 month anniversary. At this point; I have no choice about how I access the internet, hence HughesNet. What I cannot and do not comprehend, is the fact that I haven't heard from anyone at HughesNet, regarding these issues; and, unfortunately, as I have learned from experience, I probably won't hear from anyone at HughesNet, until I have to call again because YOU have blocked my access for non-payment of the remaining $59.78 of this disputed $139.67. I was granted until 3/5/12 to pay the balance. If you do not wish to address the issues of costing me a brand new computer, or my dispute about my bill, or my computer STILL sitting in my dining room, or the lack of "Recovery Act" benefits; could someone please, PLEASE, at least let me know how to access these friggin' tokens so I can get my homework done??!!!!
