Can I play games online with HughesNet?
Can I play games online with HughesNet transport?
-
Hi Tickers,
Yes you can. Please keep in mind that with satellite service such as HughesNet, data must travel up to a satellite and back – which can be as much as 45,000 miles. This results in something called “transmission latency” which can mean about a half-second delay in the time it takes your computer to communicate with a website or host-server. Some games work better than others. I hope this helps. Sara -

Hey Tickers,
I found this link on the HughesNet site that lists the games they support. Maybe this will help?

I play World of Warcraft regularly on it.
The latency does fluctuate a lot more then a land line and 900 to 1300 ms Latency is the norm.
You will not be a top Raider on it but you can level and quest and play 5 mans.
Runescape plays good on it as well.
What does not play well on it is Twitch Shooters like Quake or Unreal Tournament.
WOW has went out of their way on their end to tailor a broad range of connection type into their services. Some of the free to play MMORPG's do not have the infrastructure to support it.
Ruins Of Magic played for me a little but Lag was killin me.
I played also 2Moons and it was ok. -

i am not happy with this service. for what we pay we should not have any latency issues and should have more download time
they advertise high speed internet with hughes net but that is not true if so we should not have problems with facebook games there isn't any with high speed. i have high speed six miles from here at work and do not have these problems. this should be diosclosed ain the television commercial. this is the third time i have tried to post this and can't must be have latency issues even with 100% download time on my meter. when you call them about this they bthe tell you it is not recommended to play gamers- view 3 more comments

If you have cellphone service, you have an alternative. That's where I'm headed when my contract is up. My neighbor has a mifi and awesome service.

I can not wait until I can get reliable cell service but until then I have hughesnet. I have had Hughesnet/Directway for 6 years and have only a few complaints. Customer services needs work last time I called them told them that the satelite was physically broken and needed repairs they still made me go through all the hops since I do not have a phone other than cell and it is patchy it took 12 phone call to finally get it worked out in 30 degree weather while standing outside. I was so pissed I kept telling the guy I am looking right at the dish and it is broken.... but other than that the I have not complaints.

-
-
I would also like to add that EverQuest and EverQuest 2 used to play very well on Hughesnet. I havn't played in a year or so but they worked well before that.
-
-
I will say this.Blizzard has made refinments to there servers to help ISP's like Hughesnet. www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml
There are some MMORPG's that have a harder time. There could be any number of reasons why this is from Distance to server to some setting on the server fouling it up.
I do know that "2moons/Dekaron" works well although with lag like WOW. http://dekaron.gamehi.com/
"Runes of Magic" did work. http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html
"SecondLife" Lags really really bad...to the point of not fun at all. -
-
Like to point out the "2Moon" by Acclaim went under and "Dekaron" took over the United States accounts so if you had a 2Moons account you will need to import it to the Dekaron Servers.

I am not a regular on-line gamer, but I have submitted to my grandchildrens wishes and have joined them
in a Facebook on line game (Battle Pirates). It uses Adobe Flash Player as it's main display. I have many
calls to customer support in both Facebook (Kixeye) and Hughes Net. It comes down to this; Hughes Net
states that the service is in good order and Facebook states that the problem is with Hughes Net.
(Too many dropped packets) I have performed the speed tests that Hughes Net has many times and in my opinion
it is way too slow. Most of the time the avg. is around 8.5 to as much as 13.5 sec. I have also performed
tracert from the command prompt and it shows about the same times. I noticed a comment about transmission time
to and from the satellite. I am completely aware of these times, but tracert will actually show the real times.
Many time outs are shown within the servers that adds to the total time for either the Hughes Net speed test or
the tracert times. My last service call resulted in a new modem for my system, but only resulted in increased
times (~3 sec). It appears that the Facebook game (Battle Pirates) has a additional server for any battles
within the game. This is where the main problem pops up. Due to either dropped packets or excessive times
to connect to this server, game play is restricted (You can't see or control the battle). People playing the
game that have Hughes Net have nicknamed ourselves as 'Blind-Pirates', if this doesn't give you an indication
of what is happening, nothing will. My PC's and my home network have been blamed many times as being faulty,
but when I can take any of my PC's down to the local McDonalds and use their wireless service,
(Without any change in settings to my PC's) and the game works perfectly, I tend to agree with Facebook (Kixeye)
that the problem is with my ISP.
Lets assume that my PC is working perfectly and attack the problem that way. I have a Quad core 2.4G,
12 Gig of system Mem, and dual video cards sitting in a ASUS Maximus MB. Win 7 PRO 64 bit (All updates) and
Adobe flash ver. 11 along with it's plug ins. (Win 7 scores it 7.2 down the line without any over clocks) I have
3 different browsers to choose from. (IE9, Firefox, Chrome) Problem is present with any of the browsers)
I have 2 switches I can chose from for my network and both are wide open (a netgear 5 port or a netgear
16 port) and only this PC turned on. The PC just came from downtown and was working perfectly and I was
able to play Battle Pirates without any problems. Now I can't see a battle or control my ships during
the battle. 13:20 CST and a bright sunny day outside. My dish is pointing at this bright sunny sky with
nothing in the way. All tests on the Hughes Net pages show nothing wrong with my system.
Any suggestions on your end?????

Well within limits. 12-13 dbm. New modem and the problem has got worse!!! 3-4 hrs on the phone with a hugues tech resulted in a small increase of download speed, but within a few hrs, the problem has got worse. A ping to the hughes NOC shows 1-3 of the packets being dropped and tracert to the same site/IP shows time outs, 1200-1800ms times with avg's of 1300-1500ms. What has happened to the 'So Called 1/2 sec “transmission latency” ' you spoke about Sara??? Or could it be that Hughes has just 'Over Sold' it's service for the Bandwidth that it has available?
Again, looking for comments from the Hughes side of the house.-
What system do you have friend, 7000? 9000? 9200? And what's your current signal strength. I see a answer in decibals. I need the 2 or 3 digit number of signal strength.
7000 system better that 60
9000 system better than 130
9200 better than 80
So if ya take a breath and answer the direct question, we can rule a few things out.
I understand your frustration......and short answer is no......they have not oversold there service. -
-

Rx Signal Strength (as shown on the Hughes page) 174 / 12.50 db w/ SNR as 14.49 & 14.21 db.
HN 9000 system w/ a replacement modem (HN-9000) that is < 1 week old.
I don't mean to be testy kaosodin, but I am a EE w/ many years (+25 yrs) as a Tech in this area and I've checked (with test equipment) all of the normal problems that would pop up with equipment of this type. But I'm ready for the items that can be ruled out.
I'm curious about your statement about not over selling the BW and where you received this information.
Since I own the equipment and have a FCC lic, I have even thought about setting it up on a older 10' C/KU band dish, but with the checks I have made, I can only foresee a increase in signal strength in doing this. It would not do a thing for times within the Hughes NOC which are sometimes as much as 1800-1900 ms or more, and that doesn't count the drop times. As I stated above, I can take the same PC (Laptops or Desktops) down to the local McDonalds, without any change in setup/s and they all work great. Pings to the same sites (MSN, Yahoo, Goggle, etc) results in anywhere from 1200-1300 ms difference with the different services (Hughes and McDonalds wireless (verizon)) and the Hughes service has anywhere from 1-3 packets that are dropped. I see this as a/the major problem (dropped packets).
So, again...Looking for comments.. -
-
Do you have your old paperwork? I need a DSS number and a FSO number from your origonal paperwork, than I can run a test,
And with the results of that test, I can give you a 90% chance to fix your problem.
I need to see your squint values, noise on the line ratio.
Have you checked ground, static buildup on the line...causes noise, wont transmit.
Could be a ground block going bad, connector, radio.
But without me being able to pull stats from your modem, I can't give you a definant answer with what your describing. -
-
After >3 hrs on the landline, they (Hughes) are sending another 'New' Modem. It appears that after all of their tests showing numbers within their range, a constant ping of Google (and other sites) showed a 29-37% loss of packets. The same thing I have been telling them for months now.
kaosidin; Thanks for your input. I had checked all of your suggestions months ago. Grounds are good. My ground system that I use in my shop is much better then my electric companys and I have tied it into theirs. (I run < .25 ohm w/ a 3 probe resistometer) SNR over a 90' line(Ground blocks at each end) is well within specs. Grass level is barely seen on my next to lowest level on my O'Scope (.05) and I found it useless to even do the math for a figure.
The modem that I will be sending back, Hughes seems to think the Rev # is outdated (Rev. AD/Y). So, in a few days I'll see if that is the case. With the dropped packets that I have been having and have stated to Hughes many times, maybe they have finally come up with a fix. I dont know! Constant Pings to the modem have returned w/o any problem. Only 2 >1ms (9 & 10ms) on a session of > 1min, while the rest have all been < 1ms. Something that puzzled the Hughes agent/tech was the fact that I was connecting to a Direcway.com host (The old Hughes system)
(174.32.224.2 174.32.224.157 67.142.168.26 67.142.168.20) I don't know if this is their NOC or just a machine/s in the NOC. (I thought a NOC ended w/ a .1) I'm a 'Hardware' guy and truely admit it. I can tell you what the program/signal does when it hits the circuits, but I just haven't been able to train my mind to work the way the 'Software' guys think...
Thanks again for anyone that has commented/tried to help.-
hope this fixes you friend, please let us know whats going on. your feedback makes me a better tech.

kaosodin, Rx'd the new modem and it wouldn't install. It never got past the 1st step after self test. After many tries w/ a Hughes tech, a local tech was ordered. The tech had a trainee with her and they rechecked the system. Ant. alignment and squint was performed. During squint, the El was checked first and then Az. Both were off. During the recheck of El after the Az was set, the tech adjusted the Az adjustment. I asked if the same adj was used for both alignments. Of course this had thrown both settings off! After redoing both again and all tools put away, I again asked a simple question. Do the locking nuts require snugging up to prevent movement??? This was completed, but signals were not rechecked, so I don't really know if they are still on. I have had bad weather here since the service call, so I don't know if the problem has been solved or not. I truely hope that it has been. If not, I guess I'll just have to start the thread over again....

Personally I do not look at FB games as real 'games' - go and pay $29.00 - $60.00 or more for a game to find out it has to be played online using 'Steam' and it downloads the game off line using up all your band-width so you use the free 'get out jail card' and then still it's not done so you have to buy more and HugesNet only gives 49% of it back. So you then have to wait a day to find out you can't even play the thing using HughesNet...now that sucks!
Don't know if I'm more pissed at HugheNet or the game manufacture !!! -
-
rick first of all hughes is the biges problem we home or pro plans are the sucky plans with no really good speeds for your bank you will only get half when your completly in the red just your normal amount you had like me i had 525 now i have 1050 if i go into the red and use a token i would only get 525 back then in 24hrs if i didnt use any i would have 1050 if im lucky.. thats the way its been working for me.. and by the way NO GAMES WILL WORK ALL THAT GREAT ON HUGHESNET.. i know i have tried .. latency will allways be the problem...

For me. Sometimes you can sometimes you can't. I play Star Trek Online and it's sporadic at best. It really depends on what time of day you play. If you want to stay up during the wee morning hours you can pretty much play all night long but just try it during daytime hours and it will frustrate the hell out of you. Downloading patches will consume your daily allowance. So the answer to the question is yes, but very conditionally.

i would prefer dial up to hughs net for gaming. It can play facebook games or small internet flash games but as far as playing any games that you install on your computer it will play but it has a 2 to 3 second lag so you cant play it right. If its a war game or a game like world of warcraft you might as well have dial up its way faster!!!!

i play games one i like is frombig point called seafight . i can get to web page but cann,t play the game . this stard in feb. of this year i have been tolad i will not beable toplay it because they said because bandwith is not there? i have play this game over a year so what know? iwork nights when off that was my hobby. this would fill my nights when off work not much to due in country when your up all night.

I recently got hughes net since I moved to new location. I play world of warcraft and you can only play in the early morning hours. My ping has never been below a 1k latency in game. A 3 second delay is the least I see playing and afternoon time forget about it. So if yo are looking to play ant mmorpg or first person shooter games forget about it, this(hughes) is about the worst way to go. Get dial up and save alot of money and frustration. Hughes is by far the worst internet I have had for any kind of gaming. Latency is the killer.
-
-
you got that right i too play world of warcraft and my latencey is bad too xbox 360 wont work either and computer games like freerealm it wont download at all if you like games that only play on your computer and maybe upload scores you might be ok.. satilite will never work for games .....
-
The 360 doesn't work, because Microsoft blocks the connection for Hughes or any other sat based internet.

Mostly, I play Second Life which runs fine during the morning and day. However, from 6pm until 12am CST, latency can cause up to 3 min lag in local chat. Download speeds can drop to CMDA 1x or below dialup speed (not just in Second Life), even many txt chat clients cease to work. This mostly happens Sunday through Thursday evenings and has become the norm for the past 3 or 4 months. During this nightly lagfest, if I can log on to Second Life, about all I can do is chat via direct instant messages. Moving becomes impossible, and if I try to sit, my avatar will appear in some off world area of the sim, like 0, 0, -45. In case anyone is wondering, Second Life is not a bandwidth hogging game. Unless you constantly visit simulators not stored in viewer cache and stream high bandwidth audio, it is possible to be logged on all day and not use more than 5% of your daily allowance.
I hope Hughes launches the new satellite soon, because I really have no other option besides dialup. Politicians have been talking about expanding broadband to rural customers for years, but this never happens. Cable, DSL, and cellular companies don't care how long rural America stays in the dark ages of internet. -
-
hi Budro check this web site out www.broadbandqwireless.com thinking about it for my self ... if things dont get better but they havent in 6 years that i have had them game play on sat... will never work they say when the new sat goes up it will but you better be ready to pay big bucks out for speed like that on sat...

Thanks, but I actually tried their service. Even with the more expensive antenna, I am slightly out of range for 3G. The sales rep does speak English well, but the support rep sounds like she is from the Congo or South Africa. I did get a refund after paying to ship all the junk back. If you want to go cellular, deal with the company that has the best signal in your area, Verizon, ATT, Sprint. BroadbandQ uses Sprint, but will roam off verizon towers. If you need an eternal antenna, be sure to get a card that has an output for it. I'm sure you can get a better price on the service and equipment by bypassing this "middle man" company. If you happen to have Verizon 4G LTE in your area, this is by far the best. My phone gets speed test of 30 - 38mbps when I'm at work. Best of luck in this venture.
-
-
ty i knew it was to good to be ture hughes knows that we are stuck so thats that like i said thank you for the info..
-
-
Actually if you have good Sprint or Verizon service then Millenicom is a better option. They have better caps on either service than either provider offers with no contract and I don't know about the Sprint side but Verizon works closely with Millenicom when there is a problem to try and resolve it. Verizon will even work with Millenicom customer directly in most cases if there is a problem. All you will gain by switching though if you can't get LTE is the better latency, prices are still steep and caps are low as well as speeds in most cases with any cell provider. Go to the Millenicom portion of the BBR forums and you will find threads listing speeds people are getting for both the Verizon and Sprint service. Also keep in mind that there is a very high probability that your latency still will never frop below 100ms and while this is good for flash games and MMORPG games, it will still cause problems with twitch games like FPS games.

Hi all,
While it's true that playing some games is more difficult using satellite Internet due to latency and limited bandwidth, there are still a lot of games that are fun and work very well! You can find games that are optimized for HughesNet at this link: http://bit.ly/nwfvG4. Also, we know that many of our customers love to play Facebook games so we specifically tested them to see which ones work best with satellite Internet. Games like Farmville, Zynga Poker, and Mafia Wars all can be played with HughesNet. We're constantly working to improve our service, so we will continue to test games to make sure that we can offer you the best support possible when it comes to gaming with HughesNet. Thanks to all our customer!
-Casey -
-
Casey. I just rechecked the link that you listed above. You can't be serious!!!! If these are the only games that HugesNet has optimized, it is a joke that doesn't go over very well with your customers! Has anyone at HughesNet looked at the posts (this thread and others) concerning the problems that are present? Does anyone at HughesNet know the speed of transmitted signals? (6.18 micro sec per mile...12.36 micro sec per mile round trip...micro-sec = 1 millionth of a sec .000001) Do the math!!!! The rest of the time is processing the data/info that rides on that signal!!!! When times to process these signals/data exceed the time limits set by a game site (no answer/response to an inquiry by the game), you will not be able to play that game, the game site will simply lock you out. When sites like Goggle, Yahoo, and MSN are pinged and 20-30% of the packets are dropped (sometimes more), there is a bottle neck somewhere!! When times of 1-3 sec (Not ms or us (milli-sec .001/ micro-sec .000001)) are seen and called latency due to the distance to and from the satellite, I tend to wonder how far HughesNet put the bird up in the sky.... If you (HughesNet), are having problems with equipment, not enough bandwidth, or whatever! Lets be honest with your customers and not try to 'Snow' us with things that you would find in the barn yard!!!!! If you are working on these problems, give us a date of when and what improvements we can expect. Another interesting point; HughesNet has accepted money from the Government to improve internet service to rural areas. Has this been used to improve service to existing customers , or to add additional customers/accounts with the same old service??? Something like the doctors office that overbooks appointments. They expect you to be on time (your payment), but nothing is ever said about your time in the waiting room.

Kevin, you have fully explained the problem!! A RADAR mile (the time it takes for a round trip signal) is 12.36 mirco sec. (micro =1 millionth of a sec ) When the total time is measured from the HughesNet equipment (the local modem) to the HughesNet equipment (NOC) on the ground, and it exceeds 3 Seconds at times, something is wrong. I understand that once the signal leaves HughesNet's equipment, they have no control over these times, but the time (Latency) within HughesNet's equipment, they do have control over. The 3 sec mentioned above is within the HughesNet equipment and includes the times for the signal transit through the air. At the extreme distance of 27,000 miles to the bird, the time is 667 milli sec, or .667 sec. Where does the additional 2.5 seconds come from?? Keeping in mind, that this is just within the HughesNet equipment, and not into the Net. I can only think of the following things that can effect this;
1) Local equipment improperly setup.
2) HughesNet equipment (NOC).
3) The birds (Spaceway 3) equipment.
4) Over selling of Bandwidth. (Too many customers).
I tend to go with #4, and it appears with your last comment, that you agree; "it is just a law of physics that we all have to deal with. you have more and more people signing up with them and more and more people coming off the older systems and getting upgraded to spaceway 3 and so yes, latency is getting higher and it will continue to do so untill the new satellite gets online."
My point is, HughesNet is not being completely truthful about the service they provide. As you correctly stated, HughesNet is upgrading systems and moving these customers to the new bird and they are also signing up additional customers that use this bird. Service can only get worse due to this decision! HughesNet should be forth coming and state this! They can explain that a new bird is going up and will improve service next year, but to imply that you will have good service right now is wrong!!! Sorry to pick on your post Kevin and is not to ruffle your feathers if I did.
If a HughesNet Admin/Rep would like to comment on this post, I'm sure that it will be welcomed by all. I can only see 2 comments in the last 6 months.. -
-
Thomas, I share your observation that HughesNot has somehow found a way to take money made availabe for infrastructure improvements to provide high-speed internet service in rural areas. It must be through a loophole because they told me that when the federal money ceases to be avaialbe, they will no longer provide the $20/month discount. Giving discounts is not creating infrastructure - offering free satelite dishes is not creating infrastructure - I don't know of any satelite company that charges for dishes ro installation anyway, but the HughesNot pitch that sets a value of $200 causes me to think that they are getting $200 of taxpayer money for the dish, and anther $20/month of taxpayer money for the discount.
I believe that they are doing the same thing Verizon did in my area - that is throttling bandwidth - especially after the initial trial period - and I am making this comment based on factual information that I personally received from a high-level Verizon executive. -

Thomas thats the same games that has been there for years nothing has changed and probaly wont hughes is only good for email some web pages gaming will always have a problem you think its bad now you should have been a customer in 2005 it was really bad not to say its much better these day evening latency on world of warcraft is so bad you cant play at all..3 months ago it was pretty good now it suck bad... they say its going to get better we can only hope....

Official Hughes responses will be provided 24 to 48 hours after your post is complete (barring weekends and holidays).
Taken from the Community Site ^^^^^
So much for a good idea gone bad!!! 2 responses to the many posts here in 6 months from HughesNet's Rep's!!! Perhaps it's the ' Latency ' problem..... Come on HughesNet, you created this site for feedback and to assist your customers! Show us that this is true and that you really want to support your customers by addressing some of the above posts!-
Actually if you post your problem in a new thread instead of burying it in a thread with a hundred comments then they do get to it pretty quick. They have told people repeatedly to post thier problems in a new thread to better get a discussion to the problem. You figure there are probably 10'000 comments on this board and 4 represenatives to cover it all, it is easy to miss something but on the other hand when you post a new thread it is right out there on the front page at the top of the list when you post it and every time someone comments on that thread it moves back to the top so it will get noticed much faster.

Anyone else notice very slow speeds and sky high latency over the Christmas weekend ?
You would think with many people spending time with their family, hughesnet would have less customers online. I can't even test my speed right now cause the test won't even load. -

what plan do you have.. -

Yeah, it actually works just the oppisite, being a customer of satellite and WISP for many years, I can tell you that holidays are killer on the internet. If you play multiplayer online games much then you will see what I mean, servers get crammed on holidays.
-

I've played World of Warcraft for 6 years on hughesnet. Ive also played Star Wars the old Republic and Rift with little issues. Although I have to put up with 750 to 850 latency they are still very playable and enjoyable.

you must have a larger package than most most only have home or pro plus because latency on my end was on a good day 1700 to 1900ms soooo and that was on the hn9000..

Hughesnet is not perfect by no means but at least they are taking steps to try and improve where as alot of other providers are just tightening their fists around the publics wallet.
This 0.5 seconds becomes 120 - 180 seconds. Must be great for those that can stay home all day and play online games. For those of us that work all day and come home to mostly un-usable internet, we can only pray for an alternative to become available.
And no, I wouldn't make another phone call to India to tell tec support the modem lights are flashing if I was paid to.
They can't understand me and I cant understand them.
see the change log
The latency is NEVER as good as "a half-second" delay. It's usually on the order of 1.5 seconds, sometimes much worse.
You can however play games such as Minecraft, Everquest, WoW, and SC2 with a bearable amount of lag. I typically get 1200 ping (1.2 Seconds), when with high speed Dsl you'd get 25-300 (.025-.3 Seconds) Ping.
