Hughesnet and Linux
It would be great if Hughesnet would offer token support for Linux systems, such as Ubuntu. This would not be a technical challenge, since it already works fine and the browsers are identical. I've used HN and Ubuntu for almost 2 years, but it's frustrating when Customer Care say they can't help me with other issues due to my unsupported OS.

1Hello David,
I have forwarded your suggestion along to our development team and will post an update here once I have one.
Thank you, Sara -

Hi David ,
I have been running Mepis (Debian Linux) for many years. I have installed Adobe Air and the Hughesnet meter and it works fine, only catch is anytime you do updates to the OS it will uninstall the meter due to broken dependencies, once your updates or new installs are complete just reinstall the meter with Adobe Air utility. Like I say works on Mepis which is Debian based so it should work with Ubuntu.

That is true but the last version for Linux still works.

to install adobe air look at: http://askubuntu.com/questions/87447/... then install usage meter

The usage meter has not been an issue to me on Linux - I have a bookmark set for my modem and can check usage with a couple of key clicks.

Yes that is a way to check your usage status, but we are talking about the meter in the system tray have been running it with the Adobeair Linux v2.6 and Hughes Meter v3.035 and it works as advertised on Linux (Mepis, Debian, and Ubuntu v11).

Here's another Hughes/Linux issue. The HughesNet speed test will not run, but the web response test runs fine. The error I get is "Missing Plug-In." If I click the link it takes me to the Java download site, but I already have the current version installed.
This is the kind of issue that makes the lack of HN support frustrating, because the issue is specific to a HN application. Searches on Ubuntu forums get no useful hits.- view 1 more comment

I got it working a while back. I just needed to re-install the Icedtea plugin.
-
-
Yes the icedtea plugin is needed for Java, use Linux all the time and have not had any problems with the speed tests not running.

you need to make sure the java plugin is installed and shows up in the browser plugins
-
-
With Firefox, type 'about:plugins' in the address box and see if you have the Java plugin.

I have been using opensuse for 6years with HN without any hick-ups..

That's the whole point. I haven't had problems either. In fact it's my firm belief that a lot of the problems people report here wouldn't happen if they got rid of Windows.
The issues I've had are not OS related, but Customer Care still cannot always help because the OS is not supported. They can't run through their script when it gets to the "network connection" step. -

I'm a long-time user. I don't complain that HughesNet support does not support "Linux", because (a) there are so many flavors and (b) open source means that even with a well-known disto and a particular relesee there's no way to tell if the user has made mods.
That said, it is certainly possible to provide support up to a point. For example, the last time I contacted support the troubleshooting had nothing to do with the particular disto I was running. Any support that involves operations using the modem should not be rejected because the user's running Linux. -

I do know that linux and all other flavors of unix will work fine with Hughesnet. Actually they might even work better than windows. And for the support please dont hesitate to ask any question you have to the community, That is exactly why it was created. Everyone here is here because we choose to be. It's not paid, it's not mandatory. And i promise you, someone will answer. This community is made up of actual customers, actual installers, and every other aspect from the top to the very bottom is represented here. It's amazing to think that a customer can ask a question on any topic and get response from the people who work with that issue everyday. Even a technical question can get answereded from a level 5 Engineer who built the system. Thats just smart if you ask me..

I have used many versions of Linux on Hughesnet with little or no problems at all. Actually Linux is my operating system I use most of the time

Mint 11 user here.I'm 6 years using Linux distros,2+ years with Mint.I used Wild blue before Hughesnet Gen4 2 weeks on it.So much better.I have a few issues ,the web shell loads sometimes,I have to refresh to get the full webpage.I didn't have this with Wildblue.I attribute this to the speed.Using speedtest.net,I'm usually over 10Mbs,many times 11Mbs and better. With the old Wildblue speedtest.net was .38Mbs.
I had an Opera browser problem, the error message was remote server disconnect, for a few days. This seems to have resolved itself.
Over all,I am pleased with Hughesnet Gen4.The speed is obvious with utube videos, and larger dwnloads. My DSL friends are envious. -

I'm a Mint 13 user - on my primary desktop and laptop. I also use Xubuntu on 2 older computers and Ubuntu 12.10 on our security system computer that runs ZoneMinder Camera monitoring software and our private server.
It really irks me to call in with an email problem and not have the support people know how to deal with Thunderbird. It's a major email program and there's a Windows version of it. -
-
There should be few to no issues running mint or any other flavor on linux, but it is freeware and unsupported by anyone much less Hughesnet. We can only install the access. If you as a user decide to use freeware or any other advanced programming languge you will also have to do your own tech support, lol.. Hughesnet does work with any operating system, but using any version of linux or mozilla will require the user to support himself

I had to install icetea in the synaptic to get the hughes speed test to work.No problems after I installed that package.Mint 11,it is based on Ubuntu.

I use 3 pcs at home all are different versions of linux, no real problems. I do not want Windows in anything I own. Virus free since 2007 liberated from Bill Gates. no window'o dan'o

If people knew the advantages of Linux, more would use one of the myriad of distros. I suggest Mint as it's the most user friendly,it's recognition and ease use of the over 40,000 apps makes Mint the most popular Linux distribution.

right on I have been thinking about Mint on my house pc? I am always trying different stuff on my laptop but the wife hates change but it is time to get rid of the 11.01 Ubuntu and may do mint, my computer guy says he really likes it. All my Pcs are pretty much trade in or giveways. Put in a clean harddrive and linux operating systems and I am good to go.
good to go dan'o -

Mint's root is Ubuntu ,so there's not much change.A look distrowatch.com shows it's the most popular Linux version.

thanks I will look into it I am slow to chance, not real computer literate I retired from TBDN (Toyota) and worked with robotic machines but very different from the pcs. I went to Linux in 07 I believe and never looked back, still in a big learning curve. I get and got a buddy that turned me on to Linux and still getting help usually don't have much trouble thank for the interaction see ya on the back side. no nothing dan'o
