Trouble connecting to Steam

More recently I've been having trouble connecting to the videogame client "Steam" using hughesnet. This almost always occurs when I have poor service (usually from weather) but it has also happened randomly when I have a good connection .

I have my router set up to keep the needed ports open for steam. I am able to connect sometimes, but it's not something I can rely on. At times I have gone for a week without a successful connection attempt.

I have tried all the basic steps and want to know if there are any more advanced tips to get the application to run.

Hello Konata,
Are you in FAP zone, I can't connect at all durring FAP time cause steam needs to download a big amount of data bandwidth of nearly 3MB also what modem do you have and plan? What are you getting when trying to connect to steam and it fails to? Just a curiosity but serious question, have you been trying to connect in past couple weeks? If so, i will have you know that the steam servers are extremely busy and believe it or not i have been having trouble trying to stay connected once i'm in.

If your having any trouble with your steam game downloads will gladly guide you through somethings to fix this issue so that you can get all your downloads done in the free download time.. I have mine setup to where if my download manager has something to download, it will download it (of course in download free time) then if i have it set to where it will automatically open up steam and then automatically setting off my downloads, that easy. Let me know if this helps.

I'm not throttled. I'll get either an unable to connect or the box where I have an option to go into offline mode (which of course does not work since I was never online in the first place)

I've been having trouble recently, but I've been able to connect fine for the past week, but have had no luck the past couple of days. I download all of my steam games at an off location so that's not an issue either.

Sounds like the steam servers are too busy for your connection to handle.. maybe too much congestion, i'm not sure but give it some more time and see what happens.

Steam does not even realize I'm connected to the internet. I have connected with the exact same setup I have now consistently, but it seems that if I start having general problems with my internet steam is the hardest application to connect to.

Konata? Now that issue i DO have indeed.. I would be on my steam using the Application and when i try going to my steam profile it asks me to log in but the problem is, i already am logged in. Theres also when i will be in the steam store and things are on sale and it would also ask me to log into steam... I think the connection is only partially lost due to connection interuptions or disconnections (possibly) it could also be due to the HN servers being so unstable. Sadly there is no way to completely fix this problem.

I have the same issue. I don't know where the fault lies but I do know there is no official reply from Hughes in this thread To me it means they are aware but don't care. If they did care their answer would be we are not for gaming. An official response would be nice but I am sure she is very busy with there rocket ship/satellite launch memo's

Well i'm not an employee but i will say this- Steam is not a game but it involves gaming.. The only how is that steam is just some place to buy your games from and play them through. Some of steams games are not necessarily needed for in order to play the game, very possibly because the game is far out dated and does'nt need much help from steam so its able to play without. In my opinion steam seems very stable but the connection between you and steams servers is no way stable at all because this is simply satelite and it just cannot be done and never will but the servers are deffinately connectable to.

I have purchased a total of around 15 games in the past month, ever since then i have'nt had any problems but i would highly recommend getting a provider thats unlimited if your a steam user. Why? Because some of steams games are incredibly ginormous in size.. You also have to think about how much bandwidth all your games will use durring online play, when playing the game has to be fully updatted every second so it pulls either small amounts of bandwidth when on a very high ping connection or it will pull large amounts when on a much better ping connection of say 700 or under.. Some games simply like to pull a huge amount weather you have a very high ping or not, like COD games.

Don't take my reply in a bad way, i'm just trying my best to help others of need. Have a good day, hope this helps

RudyBob, Sara and I are sorry to hear that you doubt we will respond. We are committed to responding when requested and also allowing the community participants to feel free to reply as well. Having said that, we hope to change your opinion. ;-)
Also, I will say that C0RR0SIVE answered C Day perfectly. The star by the response is the way the community can tell which response is the most complete.

One doesn't need massive downloads to run a Steam game beyond the initial download to bring Steam and the game up to the current version(s). That can be done, as I did during the overnight period. The problem is connecting once that has been done. I will reiterate, the problem is connecting ((((CONNECTING)))))) to get your game verified so the game can be played. I have but one STEAM game. The reason I have one is cause I knew there would be problems. I don't think the problem is with STEAM. I think it is a Hughesnet issue.

Thanks for a reply there katie (official rep).....however lame and weak it is.

I'm not mad at Hughesnet or you guys. The anger seems to be from the respondents. I am merely pointing out what my experience has taught me so that others will know the score

Have a nice day

Try disabling turbo page, the only thing I could think of that would be causing that is the proxy system HN uses, or the possiblity that Steam needs you to be able to have an opened port...
