Why is HughesNet so slow?

As a new customer I am extremely disappointed in the performance of HughesNet Gen4. I have yet to see a Download of greater than 1.5 Mbps on the Power Plan which advertises a 10 MBps download speed. Very few of the tools downloaded work properly with even the status meter giving an error nag of not recognizing my HughesNet modem. Log in to the Customer Service area has page loads even slower than any other internet site. This company should be shut down with false advertising and claims they can't live up to in their service plan offers. What a mistake signing up with this crowd..

  • Hi Colette, since your tools are not recognizing your modem, this doesn't have to do with your HughesNet service, the cause would stem from the software installation or your router if you are using one. If you are using a router, have you tried to reboot your modem, router and PC as well as connecting your HughesNet modem directly to the PC?

    Did you install Adobe Air before you installed your Status Meter? If not, please uninstall your status meter completely, install Adobe Air http://customer.kb.hughesnet.com/Page... and then reinstall your status meter making sure you are installing the latest version http://customer.kb.hughesnet.com/Page....

    What other errors are you receiving with your tools? Are they time-out connection errors or something else?

    I also would like to address some issue with my service i have called several times and all they say is it is working correctly...i hate to tell you but it is not i do speed tests daily and i am not recieving a tenth of the service i'm paying for. I realize that when you guys sell theses packages it is marketed as UP TO 10 MBPS but when every person i have seen a review from is usually getting under 1 MBPS thats ridiculous come on, seeing that sattelites communicate from thousands of miles away to the dish i fail to see how location could differ a whole lot on service unless your in a shielded area but i'm in the wide open. So is anyone at hughes net going to step up and tell there customers ya our service is garbage and we can't help you or maybe that they will actually do something to fix it or maybe reduce the bills a little bit. I use the internet for my business every day and my time is worth $50 an hour to every one else so that fact that i have to sit on hold for an hour to get anyone and then not get a single bit of useful help or information absolutely disgusts me this internet has cost me more time and money than a legit internet service would have even been worth, for this kind of service i could go park in mcdonalds parking lot and get decent internet. And as far as the crap 10GB limit that takes about 2 days to use up then it goes into "throttled" mode...to me throttled does not mean doesn't work at all because that's precisely what happens after the throttling has taken affect my brand new computer struggles to load one page at a time and if any other computer is on the connection there is no chance it will stailmate and not work at all...so tell me should i be irritated?
    • I get 10Mbs download consistently. With satellite it has to do with what beam/channel you are on and how loaded it is. Also what gateway it goes through and how loaded it is.

      I would advise to cycle power to the modem by unplugging from the wall, not he back of modem, wait at least ten seconds, then reapply power.

      You may get lucky and associate with a less loaded gateway. If no joy, you may be on a overloaded beam.

      If you are in FAP mode then you'll be lucky to get 150kbps.

      All I'm going to say on this.

    • I was able to run the speed test in throttled mode and not in throttled because the monthly cycle is was over yesterday but only was able to get the download speed in non throttled mode

  • I recieved a call from hughes net and we went through the routine..unplug the router, log back in do a speed test BOOM 10.3 mbps download and .79 upload...couldn't ask for much better right...i stressed a few opinions about my bill and turns out i definatly got lied to on the charges on my account. She credited me some free data tokens and money off my bill for a few months...but i checked it again an hour later 7mbps down .41 up , one hour after that 3.6mbps down .4 up

    now 24 hours later i'm too 1.12 down .16 up that wasn't peak time from what i was told and i tried it router less and that's what i get so.... what now???

  • Hello, Dusty. Did you use your SAN for the HugesNet site? As well, speedtest.net is not an accurate testing platform as it does not account for latency which is found in satellite internet.

    Yes i used my SAN..I understand your going to say every other test but your own will be incorrect but funny how it mimics the test off your site pretty close. Regardless i don't care i wanted to try another place as long as I am still using your test then why does it matter, those were all results posted from your site so let me ask why is there a debate on the service i'm using to test i use YOURS and SEVERAL OTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     I talked to the rep on the phone she admitted my bill was flawed and that i was lied to when i recieved the service so she offered me money off my bill for 6 months and some free data she said the system was in perfect working order but otherwise she wasn't much help as soon as she called me I did several speed tests while on the phone and the speed was great 10mbps download and 1mbps upload she reassured the problem was my router so I left it unhooked and did several more after I got off the phone sure enough an hour later it was down to 5~ 7 download and .41~65 upload another hour goes by it's down to 1~ 3 and .2~.35 another hour goes by and less than 1mbps download and less than .1 upload . Also the latency was 950+ after the first hour. So the technician came, system check was 100% he checked and re checked every part of the system and it checked out 100% as well even with my NetGear router unhooked he said he has never seen anyone with speeds that low he tried re positioning the dish and got no results it was set perfect where it was he said I'm on the edge of a cell but if there wasn't good signal then it would have failed the system check because it's very sensitive but it passed with flying colors, he told me that Hughes net just can't provide me with the service I'm paying for....and he was a very smart, thorough, and helpful person frankly he deserves a promotion for how in depth he was and listening to all my questions not talking gibberish like all the Hughes net phone reps so now what...I WOULD REALLY like to be rid of this contract this is bull I know it's bull because I found out actually the tech discovered I have 4 neighbors with Hughes 2 of which are on the gen4 and there internet is just as slow I've checked with them they just don't bicker and were willing to take that... I however am not I want out of this contract without paying your outrageous $400 early disconnect fee as I was lied to originally by the tech that installed the system telling me I had 3 months to decide and after something to the effect of 31~34 days I called and wasn't satisfied I was told I couldn't cancel without paying $400 and I have been getting over charged by $30+ a month every month I have all this information recorded along with all conversations even with the technician if this isn't resolved in 15 days I will be contacting the BBB

    For us to try to resolve any issues you may be having, we need to see more of those tests to evaluate what your site is getting.

  • If i am correct you can do a speed test for my system from your computer..and you get paid to be on that computer, my time is worth $50 an hour to everyone else and this is a huge waste of my time. I shouldn't have to do these speed tests especially since you have to do it 5 times everytime. It takes about 4-6 minutes to complete a speedtest that is ridiculous the fact of the matter is i should NEVER EVER have speeds as low as they average 145kbps download? Give me a break that is terrible even if it's during peak time it should never fall that low and the technician confirmed that. I run a business i have to work i can't be at the computer all the time wasting more of my time....regardless i will jump through these stupid hoops i pay to jump through i will relay what i find in my tests over the next couple days. I don't think you guys are getting the point MY INTERNET SUCKS ALL THE TIME NOT JUST CERTAIN TIMES OF THE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a feeling this is unanimous between alot of your customers after researching reviews and ratings for hughes net.

  • That's bogus I've never had a speed test that good except on the phone with the rep also that isn't great for a ping time almost 3/4 of a second is nothing special...I'm collecting test results so we will see and it doesn't matter what your test shows anyhow because at the end of the say my internet is still crap...what time was this test taken ?

    • O really well the technician told me it should be closer to the 500~550 range and he does it everyday so I'm going to go ahead and stick with his opinion, according to what I know actually 680 isn't terrible your right but not great when the tech was here he said I had the worst ping he ever seen it was around 1000...if that is a decent ping then why is my internet so slow? 5~ 15 seconds to load one single page that's crap nobody in the world should have to pay for something that performs like this
    • Ping (latency) alone does not have that big of an impact on browsing unless really high. I'm getting 717ms right now and browsing is just fine. There are MANY other bottlenecks with satellite that can have a negative impact on your ability to surf. That was the main point I was trying to make.

    • Well I don't care what you recognize I've tested it several times do you think I made those numbers up??! I'm done burning my time up testing it if your system doesn't recognize it then obviously you're system is truly junk and that sir is not my problem I'm not testing again it is a waste of time and I will obviously get the same results I posted the time dates and results if your system doesn't show it THAT IS NOT MY PROBLEM and kind of funny both technicians that were here used speedtest.net so obviously its effective and that's your companies way of coping out of providing some real results I want something done about this this is bull I've jumped through your hoops and proved this is a junk service for me and obviously several others I tested the system with the link you posted a ton of times so there's no reason it shouldn't show, if you can't provide some results get someone on here that can...God knows you can never get ahold of your service people on the phone without waiting 45 minutes and that is time I don't have to jerk around with this be fair about this just let us out of our contracts, I've never been more dissatisfied with something in my life.

    I'm hoping anyone who is interested in subscribing to Hughes Net will read this; DO NOT DO IT.
    I recently joined Hughes Net as part of my package with Direct TV and so far it has been the worst service in any aspect of life.
    To begin they inflicted property damage on my home and have still yet had a representative return my calls to come and fix the job.
    Secondly, the actual Hughes Net service is a complete abomination of internet service. It's unbearably slow (think 1995 dial-up days, only worse). The speed in which it takes to load a page, a picture or a video can literally take up to hours.
    I've tried almost everything possible to free up the service to function at 100% on our devices, but still I am not seeing any improvement.
    I'm currently in the process of finding a way of voiding my contract as well as having to seek legal action to have the damages done to my house repaired.
    This is by far the worst service I have ever had, in any aspect of life. Hopefully, no one will make the same mistake my family and I have made by deciding to use Hughes Net.

    So far you haven't stated just what steps you have take to speed things up or really anything with which to work with.

    What platform Gen4 (HT1000 or HT1100) or 9000 wannabe Connect/ Connect Pro

    What Plan with those platforms, speeds vary by plan.

    Have you opened the modems System Control Center at 192.168.0.1 ?

    Signal strenght ?
    Error Codes?
    State Codes ?

    Any snow or ice on the dish face or feedhorn ?

    Are you connected directly or thru a router ?

    If a by router have you tryed to reduce the number of variables by doing a direct connect.?

    Have you performed any speed tests ?

    What OS are you using ?

    What browser are you using ?

    Have you posted any case numbers from phone support so that the Forum Mods can look up your account details, service notes and perhaps run some remote diagnostics.?

    Without some way of identifing you they would have to put on some kind of tin foil hat to find just you from every other oerson named Ben in the entire US.

  • The service at my house is pretty pitiful as well.

    I believe we are paying for the 10/1 and instead I am getting 2.6/0.53.

    Videos stream pretty slowly, live streaming sucks, and video chat is virtually impossible.

    i was told i would be able to live stream an hour a day!!! {Not} I have been unable to live stream my show on justin tv or your cam with out picture freezing unable to open chat room at times. And we pay about $110.00 a month whats wrong with this picture.Know i get message all the time still owe $20.00 on my bill well lets see take of 11.00 insurance 4.00 for tool set up $2.00 for computer securty that about covers $20.00 wouldnt you saythis sucks and im stuck with it for two years hummmm whats wrong with this picture.By the way thell probably shut me down for $20.00????????

  • My service improved quite a lot since I finally was escalated to engineering support at Hughes. They found that my modem wasn't correctly setup. So, I applaud getting that resolved. That said, I wouldn't consider any satellite system as being a replacement for cable, dsl or fiber, due to all of the latency dealing with a satellite. If you are trying to run as any sort of server, you have to keep that latency in mind. I would suggest that if you wish to stream video, then upload it to a service like youtube, and let their servers pipe it through their huge pipes to the net. All you would have to do is just send someone the URL. Sat service will always be full of fits and jerks. I run our webserver from a host as I do not expect Hughes to be able to deliver content flawlessly. But, I can remote edit my site via Hughesnet. It's about all it's good for. You could do that and downgrade your service.

  • by the way my guy for our direct tv was out here today to replace line to there dish WAS NOT HAPPY WHEN HE SAW YOUR GROUND FROM HUGHES NET DISH WAS HOOKED TO THERE DISH GROUND !!!! Also WRONG TYPE OF WIRE USED FOR GROUND !!!!!! COULD OF BEEN ONE POSABLE REASON FOR PROBALUMS WITH PICTURE ON OUR TV. $4,000.00 TV YOU WOULD OF BEEN PAYING FOR!!!!!! NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!!!!

    I hear ya!!!! makes ya mad!!!! looking for new service here to. One of these years may be they will get it right. pay almost $ 80.00 a month for crap.paying this much money with almost any other major server we would be zipping a long.still problums with being able to do my live stream politics show.     • Ok, so i called customer service, and the person on the other end of the phone told me hughesnet is crap. He was located in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Imagine for a guy in a third world country tell me that! That says it all.

      Guys just cancel it thats the only solution. Plus when i got the service they never told me that was limited. And for that price, and that speed!

  • Expecting to run a live video service off of a family grade satellite service is a bit unrealistic. You should cancel before your month is up. You would want a fiber connection if you expect to have a flawless video/audio server as most home DSL service isn't good enough either, especially if you are not running from a static IP address and paying for a server grade contract/connection. At $80 a month you aren't paying for HughesNet Server service with a static IP address, are you?

  • Hughes.net Gen4 system.
    Yep Poor Upload Speeds, Poor Download Speeds, latency numbers in the 800-900Ms range.SINCE DAY ONE. Streaming video, gaming, and just about anything to do with the internet takes as long as a 56k modem, better yet 14.4k modem. hughes.net promises high speeds and they do not hold up to there promises.
    Customer Service is a joke, they're billing is a joke, I have requested paper billing and to not have the money directly withdrawn from my account. rep/rep's on other end of the phone assured me it wouldn't happen anymore and month after month it does. My system, programs, network, hardware are top notch working condition and I upgrade all of it regularly. I have been an owner of Networking business for commercial and industrial systems for over 20 years now. I took a gamble when I moved to the Country, agreeing to hughes.net contract of 2 years and was quickly disappointed with in the first week I knew I had been took. But at the time no other "High Speed" Solution was available.

    I will not run any of your speed tests or go through the phone tag unplug my equipment jump through your hoops until you think you fixed the problem.
    Instead I will eat the contract and the few $$$ over the remaining 9-months to a year and never recommend your company to another soul. which may seem minor to a company of your size but keep in mind i deal with many national companies networks regularly and often find solutions to there bandwidth needs. Hughes.net is not a solution. Hughes.net has done nothing but avoid the problem, their lack of quality and speed that they offer, if they were truthful to the customer from the start this topic probably wouldn't be so full.

    I see that I am not the only person with the slow speed problem. It reminds me of the good old days of dial up. I've only had hughes net for a couple of months and I thought that this is all there is till I started reading up on the situation. I went to the site to run speed test and had to restart the up/down load test after 10 min. Then on a couple of tries it seemed to work.(slow but worked) Is there a good way to get speed out oh hughes net?????

  • First, try the usual. Unplug the modem and wait a minute or two, plug it back in and see what happens. If there is no change, before Tech Support will help, run the speedtest 3-4 times daily for a couple of days. THEN call tech support and stay on tech support. If you get no relief, yak about it here. But, you have to do due diligence and run the speed tests, else you'll get no support if you can't cooperate to provide evidence of your problem.

    If you do your part, Sue and the rest will jump on it. Just not over-night, but still fairly quickly. My connect is faster than it's ever been. since Sue escalated my case. Again, I had to present a case first. That's all it takes. Ric
